Even if the player did not compete in a Maryland-Sweet-16 Qualifier during the 2016-2017 qualifying season, a K-12 player who is rated 1600+ and is a MD resident (or a student at a school in MD), may qualify by rating for the MS16, if the player contacts MCA at tournaments@mdchess.com by 2017.02.16.

Day 2 of the 2016 Maryland Sweet 16 tournament has started, and Round 3 has been completed. With draws on the top boards, the field has become more bunched, setting up an exciting Round 4. Depending on the results of the top Boards, we could have an outright winner, or a playoff that could involve 2-5 players. A playoff between two players will be an Armageddon game. If there are 3 or more players, then a Blitz Playoff will take place.

Standings after Round 3 (in tiebreak order)

2.5 - Richard Tan; Peter Heesters; Andrew Mao

2.0 - Sahil Sinha; Arthur Tang; Ronald Best Jr; Jeffrey Du; Justin Hontz

This match was the second completed in Round 4 putting pressure on Andrew Mao (3rd round co-leader) to defeat top-rated Sahil Sinha to force a playoff.
