The 2012 Chesapeake Open that was held January 6-8 set a new attendance record with 185 players, breaking last year's record by 50! Youth dominated the Championship section with Jared Defibaugh coming in first and Kevin Wang alone in second place.

An interesting game of Jared's is his round three win over fellow 2300 player, Ian Schoch. You don't get to see many Smith-Mora Gambits played at that level. Jared's 14. Nd5 is the classic knight sac in the Smith-Mora.

We tried out a few new things at the tournament. We broadcast the top board live on mdchess.com which generated a large number of viewers. At the Baltimore Open we plan to broadcast the top two boards throughout the tournament. We also provided wood boards on the top 11 boards and upgraded boards and pieces for many other boards.

We've got several interesting changes that we're planning for next year. So stay tuned
