Welcome to the 2013-2014 qualifying season for the 2014 Maryland Sweet 16.
The MCA scholastic season is underway, and one of the featured competitions is the Varsity section qualification to the MD Sweet 16, where 16 of the top Maryland scholastic players will compete in a separate section of the UMBC Open on March 1-2, 2014.
The Maryland Sweet 16 Champion will receive a 4-year Maryland Sweet 16 Scholarship to UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County). The fixed-dollar scholarship covers tuition and fees, but not room and board (valued at $39,056 over 4 years in 2012-2013).
The rules for qualification and scoring have changed this season. The number of MD Sweet 16 Varsity Points is weighted by the strength of the field: the number of VP = # of players + 1 - (place finished), rather than # of players / (place finished). In order to provide the opportunity for longer games akin to those at the MD Sweet 16, the Denker High School National Championship, & the Barber Middle School National Championship, MCA schedules only 2 rounds of Game 90/inc 30 games at its MD Sweet 16 Qualifiers. To keep the sections reasonably sized and competitive, MCA has raised the floor of the Varsity section from 1100 to 1400. More details can be found by clicking here.
